European Commission proposes candidate status for Serbia and opening of accession negotiations with Montenegro

The European Commission recommended to the Council, on 12
October, to grant Serbia EU candidate status. Enlargement
Commissioner Štefan Füle said that the negotiations could be opened
as soon as the country makes significant progress towards
normalising its relations with Kosovo* in line with the conditions
of the Stabilisation and Association process. The Commission also
recommended to the opening of accession negotiations with
Montenegro.
